Financial Aid

Most of our doctoral students are supported through graduate research assistantships that cover full tuition and health fees and provide a monthly stipend for living expenses.  Our support is very generous.  If you are interested in a graduate assistantship, you
should submit a completed application for graduate admission by January 15 of the same calendar year.

Our key criteria for selecting PhD students for admissions and financial aid are:
  • Strength of current and past program(s) and school(s)
  • GPA
  • Ranking in class/school
  • GRE (required) and TOEFL (when required)
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement

Research experience and/or publications will enhance your application, but are not required.

Full funding is usually available only to doctoral students.

In addition to graduate assistantships, Washington University offers fellowship programs for women and minorities (e.g., the Olin Fellowship and the Chancellor's Fellowship).  External funding is also available from private foundations and government sources.

Estimated expenses for the current academic year may be found here
Washington University encourages and gives full consideration to all applicants for admission, financial aid, and employment. The University does not discriminate in access to, or treatment or employment in, its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran status, or disability. Present Department of Defense policy governing ROTC and AFROTC programs discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation; such discrimination is inconsistent with Washington University policy. Inquiries about compliance should be addressed to the University's Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, Washington University, Campus Box 1184, One Brookings Drive, St. Louis, MO 63130-4899, (314) 935-5949.
